Each year, the English department organises a anti bullying day at the Near East college. The activities organised during the day aim to help students understand how wrong bullying is. Year 6 and Year 7 students, teachers and members of the administration attended the activities. “What is bullying and how does it feel” themed posters prepared by participating students were hung up around the school. They read poetry, put on a sketch and read out famous quotes. Besides these, a tower was built and messages about uniting together were hung from it.
There were shows one after the other and anti-bullying songs were played all day. All the students wore blue or pink and by holding hands in the playground they formed the peace symbol and had a photo taken.
The Near East College administrators said “all around the world, we witness physical abuse amongst children and teenagers at schools. Physical abuse is one type of bullying. Children bullied or those who witness bullying change psychologically. They do not want to come to school and suffer academically. They loose their self-confidence and feel alone and helpless causing them to suffer socially as well. Bullies who bully people at school grow up to become adults with no social skills and have trouble in forming relationships.” They then added that the anti-bullying activities were very important for all the students not just those who participated.
