Near East College is the winner of the ODTÜ Science Competition


Near East College became the winner of the 2nd Science Competition held by Middle East Technical University-Northern Cyprus Campus (METU-ODTU); a competition held annually among secondary school students in order to promote and encourage new generations’ interest to science.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the competition is held to raise awareness and promote science among the youth studying at secondary schools in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. It is also held with the aim to encourage team spirit, competition alongside fun while learning to think scientifically. Near East College year 11 ÖSS students Doğukan Baysal and Yılmaz Evre became the winner of the competition where 20 questions were asked on science and computer technology. It was pointed out that Near East College team members were awarded two tablet computers due to their success at the competition.

Foundation to raise new generation scientists is being established…
Making a statement on the matter, Teacher in charge of the ÖSS Science Department students, Nezire Şensoy, expressed that they were laying foundations to future scientists by promoting and raising interest to the field of science and that they perceived this to be the primary aim of the ÖSS Science Department.

She further expressed that starting from middle school, the Near East College prioritised to raise students who questions and who are not based on an education based on memorisation. Therefore, she stressed that competitions such as the Science Competition were significant platforms as they offered an opportunity to reflect upon the successful education provided by the Near East College. In addition to the above, Nezire Şensoy stated that they were proud of their students and congratulated them for their achievement in the competition. She also thanked the school authorities for their continuous support.


Emphasised the significance of raising younger generations as individuals with scientific minds…
Also making remarks on the matter, Head Teacher of Near East College Işılay Arkan congratulated the two students who won the competition and all the teachers who contributed to the students’ success. He stressed the importance of raising young generations who have high interest to science and are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge. He added that as the Near East College they were aware of raising individuals with scientific minds; able to find solutions to problems and think analytically. He ended his words by stating that as a school, they were proud to educate skilled students who have adopted multiple perspectives as this is to later take them to success in their future lives.
