Headmaster Işılay Arkan, his Deputy Ömer Ozkan and Head of the English Department Lesley Hakseven on Thursday 6 November inaugurated the “NEC Speakers’ Corner”, proposed and designed by English teacher Gülten Sert Goker, acting on behalf of year 6 and year 7 students and their teachers.

Mrs Hakseven during the ceremony explained that the purpose of the Speakers’ Corner was to allow students to voice their wishes or their complaints in English and to enhance their abilities to address crowds. The move would allow the administration to hear students’ wishes and complaints and take them into consideration, she said. According to Hakseven, the Speakers’ Corner will serve to upgrade students’ self confidence and develop their language skills.

The students said they were extremely pleased with the move, which would present them with a democratic environment of unprecedented nature.
